Behind the song
A public grammar becomes music
Area. Wind. Weather. Visibility. Every Shipping Forecast block already contains sequence, movement and resolution. Moderate or Good treats that fixed language as rhythmic material rather than decoration.
The chorus follows the real clockwise journey through the sea areas. Names such as Viking, Utsire, Forties and Cromarty land like the opening beat of each new forecast block; the recurring visibility phrase becomes the release at the end of the bar.
The arrangement also remembers the nightly ritual of Radio 4 on 198 kHz. It is careful about the history: the Long Wave carrier ended, but the Shipping Forecast continued on other services.
The real sea-area sequence
The chorus travels through the forecast’s geography in order, turning names and pauses into metre.
Area, wind, weather, visibility
A functional public pattern gives each verse block its opening, motion and point of return.
The carrier ended. The forecast continued.
The song is about the texture and companionship lost with Long Wave without pretending the service disappeared.
